Question 4 – Personal Perspective – Concept
How effectively was the concept of “transportation” explored? Do you think that this student successfully communicated transportation as the main idea of the composition; if not what do you think the main concept is?
——–
Hello Chuck,
Transportation is clearly the main idea of your overall project; you effectively present the topic in a clear manner. The two things that first came to mind when I first saw your image was “transportation makes the world go round” and “transportation is universal.”
You include, I believe, three (major) types of transit: trains, airplanes and automobiles/trucks. I find it very clever that you use the highway as three different forms of “landing/driving” arenas, as well. Your background image of the world really makes me think of how transportation connects the whole world (well, the majority of it). In some way, the way you positioned each of the three forms of transit make me think of an hierarchy with airplanes being on top (seeing as it does allow people to travel from country to country).

Question 2 – Line–Chuck
How is line used in the composition? Contour, types of line, emotion or texture effectively used (describe where and how within the composition).
How were elements of line used to optimum effect in composition? If line was not effective give reasons.
The use of line was very effective in this composition with the light-rail train and truck following the real lines of the elevated road beds and the jet flying over an elevated roadbed that abruptly ends like the end of a runway.
The imaginary line of the jet’s flight path is excellent.
The lines or curves of the elevated road beds give a sense of both direction and motion of the vehicles traveling on these roadbeds.
The implied line of the trains formed by the edge of the train roof broken by the space between train cars is an excellent use of line.
Also the very fine pale red line on the first car of the train also provides a sense of motion.
The use of shadows on the underside of the roadbed and on the sides was also a very effective use of curved lines.
Contour real lines are also used in the negative space to provide an outline of the countries on a map of the world where the jet can take you.
Overall an outstanding use of lines for contour, real, implied and imagined. Well executed.

Question 5 – Personal Perspective – Quality
What do you think of the quality of the design and composition? Do you believe the composition was well thought out, reasons? Were the elements of space, line and shape effectively used (yes and no not acceptable answers)?
—
The more I look at this design, the more I am impressed with the quality and thought that went into it. First of all, the elements are clean and well-placed, close enough for a unified design yet enough negative space to avoid being cluttered. The three overpasses form bold lines that grab the viewer’s attention. The map in the background shows how easily we can travel all over the globe using current technology. A different mode of transportation is showcased on each overpass, a train on the illusion of tracks, a plane using the overpass as a runway, and a semi truck heading the opposite direction. Much attention was paid to the details in this composition, as all of the elements are well-cut from their source images giving the composition a clean, professional look without the jagged edges that are usually present in cut-and-paste work in photoshop. Well done.

Question 3 – Shape
How is shape used in the composition? 2-d, 3-d, grouping of shapes, etc. How were elements of shape used to optimum effect in composition? If shape was not effective give reasons.
This composition is filled with shape! There are a combination of 2-d shapes (the map of the world in the background) as well as 3-d shape (the highways, that look very similar to 635 :0), as well as the plane. train, and 18 wheeler). The use of shape in the picture really gives you a sense that youre going somewhere! I feel combination of 2-d and 3-d shape was used very well, and gives great balance to the compositon. Where using more 2-d may have rendered the piece less than impressive and more 3-d would have been overwhelming, he has found great symmetry between the two!
